The Saturday Evening Post
In 1850, Nathan Augustus Hobbs was living in Georgia around the time the beloved Saturday Evening Post first delighted entertainment-hungry Americans.
On this day in 1821, the first issue of The Saturday Evening Post appeared. This was the first use of the new name, coined by new owners, but the weekly was begun in 1729, by twenty-two-year-old Benjamin Franklin. His Pennsylvania Gazette was one of five regular publications in the colonies, and itself a purchase from a previous publisher who had struggled on for ten months under the title, The Universal Instructor in All Arts and Sciences and Pennsylvania Gazette.
The Post inherited Franklin's type, and was first published in the same print shop Franklin used, where a jingle written by Franklin still hung over the door:
"All ye who come this curious art to see, / To handle anything must cautious be....
Franklin's Gazette aimed for a window on the world, as opposed to local news, and had a rule that there should be an article of literary merit in every issue. But the literary mandate did not always or easily square with the magazine's other mandate, that of being the voice and guardian of Middle America.

Georgia Land Lotteries
Nathan Augustus Hobbs lived in Georgia in 1830, a time when the state redistributed about 75 percent of its land.
With millions of acres up for grabs in the 19th century, Georgia implemented a lottery system to encourage settlement.
Hundreds of men, widows, and orphans over the age of 18 rushed to stake their claims when millions of acres in Georgia—land taken from Cherokee and Creek tribes—opened up for settlement in 1805 to white pioneers. Tickets representing the hopeful landowners were pulled from barrels at crowded public drawings. About 20 percent of applicants won, taking home between tracts that were 40 to 490-acres, some rich with gold.
Given that thousands of Cherokee and Creek Native Americans had been forcibly removed from their homelands for the lotteries, the system was met with resistance. Their protests were taken all the way to the Supreme Court that ruled in favor of protecting native lands in 1832. But backed by the U.S. Army, U.S. President Andrew Jackson ignored the mandate and relocated the tribes to reservations out West. After eight lotteries over the course of 28 years, 75 percent of the state’s land had been redistributed before the system was disbanded in 1833.
In the 1832 case Worcesterv. Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee and Creek tribes, declaring that it was illegal to trespass and settle on Native American land. Regardless, tribes were forced onto western reservations along a path dubbed the Trail of Tears. 1866, Washington, D.C.. Credit: Apic/Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Land distribution was originally managed using the headright system, which granted tracts to any able-bodied white male who could afford the costs involved in bringing laborers to develop the land. The system eventually went out of favor after too many Georgians complained it favored the rich. 1817, Georgia. Credit: Historic Map Works LLC
The lotteries gave land to about 100,000 families. Unlike other redistribution programs like the Homestead Act, Georgians weren’t required to settle the land. They simply had to pay a nominal fee to collect the deed. 1832, Georgia. Credit: Cculber007/Wikimedia Commons/Public Domain

The Night the Stars Fell
In 1833 Nathan Augustus Hobbs was living in Georgia where they may have witnessed one of the most spectacular meteor showers in history on “the night the stars fell.” In the hours just before dawn in November 1833, the skies across the United States were lit up by thousands of meteors. The night of November 12-13, 1833, not only marks the discovery of the Leonid meteor shower, but it marks the actual birth of meteor astronomy. During the hours following sunset on November 12, some astronomers noted an unusual number of meteors in the sky, but it was the early morning hours of the 13th that left the greatest impression on the people of eastern North America. During the 4 hours which preceded dawn, the skies were lit up by meteors.
Although meteor showers are common, no one predicted the explosion of shooting stars that illuminated the night sky on November 12, 1833.
Just before dawn, people threw on clothes and gathered in roads and fields to watch the 150,000 meteors (about 30 per second) dance in plain view during the storm’s peak. One eyewitness told the Pantagraph newspaper in Illinois that, “the very heavens seemed to be ablaze.”
Though many were spellbound, not all rejoiced in the cosmic celebration. At the time, the South was a hotbed for the national religious revival known as the Second Great Awakening. Some awoke terrified, fearing it was the End of Days, as predicted by a Bible verse:
“and the stars of heaven shall fall.”
Reactions to the 1833 display varied from the hysterics of the superstitious claiming Judgement Day was at hand, to just plain excitement by the scientific, who estimated that a thousand meteors a minute emanated from the constellation Leo. Newspapers of the time reveal that almost no one was left unaware of the spectacle, for if they were not awakened by the cries of excited neighbors, they were usually awakened by flashes of light cast into normally dark bedrooms by the fireballs.
But in the weeks following, newspapers demystified the showers with science.
At the time of the 1833 display, the true nature of meteors was not known for certain, but theories were abundant in the days and weeks which followed.
The Charleston Courier published a story on how the sun caused gases to be released from plants recently killed by frost. These gases, the most abundant of which was believed to be hydrogen, "became ignited by electricity or phosphoric particles in the air."
The United States Telegraph of Washington, DC, stated, "The strong southern wind of yesterday may have brought a body of electrified air, which, by the coldness of the morning, was caused to discharge its contents towards the earth." Despite these early, creative attempts to explain what had happened, it was D. Olmsted who ended up explaining the event most accurately.
After spending the last weeks of 1833 trying to collect as much information on the event as possible, Olmsted presented his early findings in January 1834. He noted the shower was of short duration, as it was not seen in Europe, nor west of Ohio
After spending the last weeks of 1833 trying to collect as much information on the event as possible, Olmsted presented his early findings in January 1834. He noted the shower was of short duration, as it was not seen in Europe, nor west of Ohio
[Author's note: We now know the shower was seen by numerous Native American tribes throughout the midwest and western United States, who frequently referred to the event as "the night the stars fell."]
His personal observations had shown the meteors to radiate from a point in the constellation of Leo. Finally, noting that an abnormal display of meteors had also been observed in Europe and the Middle East during November 1832, Olmsted theorized that the meteors had originated from a cloud of particles in space. Although the exact nature of this cloud was not explained properly, it did lead the way to a more serious study of meteor showers.

Cotton in the Deep South
Nathan Augustus Hobbs was living in Georgia in 1850 when the cotton crop reigned as lifeblood to the state’s economy.Cotton played a major role in the success of the American South as well as its demise during the Civil War.
1800 cotton was king. The Deep South in the United States supplied most of the world’s cotton—in booming British factories, it was spun into fabric then sold around the empire.
Farmers across the region were producing larger harvests than ever before thanks to the cotton gin, and more cotton required more labor.
Four million enslaved African Americans lived in the South by 1850, most toiling on plantations 16 hours a day, pruning, watering, and harvesting. Small farms with few or no slaves also tried their hand at the crop, but the 1 percent of families in the South who owned more than 100 slaves dominated wealth and power in the region. They devoted their days to entertaining and politics, sending their children to elite schools in the North and abroad.
At the onset of the American Civil War, cotton would financially sustain Confederate troops and even play into war strategy. By war’s end, the cotton industry and the American South were transformed forever.

A Visit to Penfield
Another remarkable landmark is "Old Uncle Nathan Hobbs" whose name and long gray beard are familiar to every Penfield student. Though in his 94th year, he is still hale and hearty; chops cotton, builds cow houses, reads without eye-glasses, enjoys a good joke, eats collards, corn bread, pound-cake, pig-iron, chunks of wood, sole leather and anything that may come along, and digests it all like a grist mill. It was a great pleasure to meet him, and his faithful daughter, Fanny, who looks after him so kindly in his old age.

He was born in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Seventy-five years ago he settled at his present home, where he has lived continuously ever since.

In 1826, Nathan was baptized in Town creek, Rev. Jack Lumpkin performing the ceremony. His companion in going down under the water was the late Hon. Thomas Stocks, who was president of the state senate. For eighty-five years Nathan had been afflicted with theumatism.
The old man is a great reader. For the news he reads The Weekly Constitution regularly; for church events he looks to the Christian Index, and for religion he reads an old Bible which was found on the battlefield of Cowpens, in 1781. The book was in an oaken chest, which had been left on the field by the British. He expresses his determinatino to live until he is 125 years of age.

Old Folks in Greene.
Union Point, Ga., - March 4 {Special} - Greene is one of the healthiest counties in the state, and as evidence of it, we have between six and ten people over ninety years old. Old Uncle Nathan Hobbs of Penfield, was 98 in January. Mrs. Rachel Jackson near here, is in her ninty-seventh year. Dr Paullaim, of Greensboro, is about ninety-six, Captain Gerald, of Bairdstown, is about the same, and several other white people over ninety. There are several negroes over ninety. This is a good showing for old people.

Greene county numbers among its citizens three nonogenarians
- Mr Nathan Hobbs, of Penfield who is in his 98th year;
Dr Thomas N Poullain, of this city who will soon be 97, and
Mrs Jackson of Siloam, who will soon be 97.
Each of this venerable trio is in the enjoyment of excellent health, though of course, each is feeble from the weight of years, and each one bids fair to pass the century limit. They live in separate communities, but all could visit without going more than seven miles. Mrs Jackson draws a pension from the United States government.

Uncle Nathan Hobbs died in Penfield, aged ninety-nine years, five months and three days, having been born the 8th of January 1790, near Cowpens, in North Carolina. He lived in Greene County just ninety-five years and was one of the most remarkable men ever raised in the county. For seventy-five years he was an invalid, a great sufferer from chronic rheumatism. He was for twenty-five years postmaster at Penfield, before the removal of Mercer University to Macon, and made an efficient and popular official. He was exemplary member of the Baptist church, having joined the church at old Shiloh, Greene county, more than seventy-five years since. His long life most truly illustrated the honest man and the geniel, unobtrusive Christian. His death was peaceful, "like one who, drawing the drapery of his couch around him, lies down to pleasant dreams."
